Port Canaveral Expansion 2011

Expansion of Port Canaveral was announced by the Canaveral Port Authority on August 26 2011. In the Brevard County, Florida, United States, Port Canaveral is a cruise, cargo and naval port. It is third-busiest cruise port in the United States next to Port of Miami and Port Everglades. The port experiences a high volume of traffic because of deep water cargo port.

After NASA space shuttle program closed down and shuttle workers facing layoffs Port Canaveral has brought gleam of hope. This would benefit local communities to get thousands of jobs at the Space Coast. The expansion would include adding a new cruise terminal. The expansion my cost $60 million to $100 million. It includes the redesign of Canaveral Cove, new cargo piers, and a welcome center. The terminal is expected to be completed by 2012 where the Carnival's cruise ship "Ecstasy" will dock. The Canaveral Cove Welcome Center is expected to start in 2013.

"The building of a new cruise terminal, piers, and the design of the Cove project are vital to the growth of Port Canaveral, and come at a crucial time for our community," says Joe Matheny, Chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Commission. "The thousands of direct and indirect jobs created from these various projects will help provide local employment and tax revenue to bolster our area’s sagging economy."
